How to get to Zanzibar
Flight & Ferry Options
From Abuja (ABV)
* Ethiopian Airlines – ABV → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Zanzibar (ZNZ) (sometimes via Dar es Salaam).
* RwandAir – ABV → Kigali (KGL) → ZNZ or Dar es Salaam (DAR).
* Kenya Airways – ABV → Nairobi (NBO) → ZNZ/DAR (some routes seasonal).
From Lagos (LOS)
* Kenya Airways – LOS → NBO → ZNZ/DAR.
* Ethiopian Airlines – LOS → ADD → ZNZ (or via DAR).
* RwandAir – LOS → KGL → ZNZ/DAR.
* Air Tanzania – LOS → Dar es Salaam (DAR), then connect to ZNZ.
From New York (JFK/EWR)
* Kenya Airways – nonstop JFK → Nairobi (NBO), then NBO → ZNZ (or DAR).
* Qatar Airways – JFK → Doha (DOH) → Zanzibar (ZNZ).
* Emirates / flydubai – JFK/EWR → Dubai (DXB), then DXB → ZNZ.
* KLM / Delta – NYC → Amsterdam (AMS) → ZNZ (seasonal; otherwise connect to DAR).
* Lufthansa & others – NYC → Frankfurt (FRA) → DAR, then short hop/ferry to ZNZ.
From London (LHR/LGW)
* Qatar Airways – London → Doha (DOH) → ZNZ.
* Emirates / fly Dubai – London → Dubai (DXB), then DXB → ZNZ.
* Ethiopian Airlines – London → Addis Ababa (ADD) → ZNZ.
* Kenya Airways – LGW → Nairobi (NBO) → ZNZ/DAR.
* KLM – London → Amsterdam (AMS) → ZNZ (seasonal; otherwise to DAR).
* Note: British Airways & Lufthansa usually route via partners to DAR, not direct to ZNZ.
From Dar es Salaam (DAR) to Zanzibar
* By Ferry – 1 hr 20–30 min, several daily departures (Azam Marine, Zan Fast Ferries).
* By Flight – 30–40 minutes, multiple daily flights (Precision Air, Coastal, Air Tanzania, etc
Tanzania / Zanzibar Visa Information
1. Visa Requirement
• All visitors traveling for tourism purposes are required to apply for an Ordinary Visa, except American nationals (USA passport holders), who must apply for a Multiple Visa.
2. Travel to Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar
• Applicants visiting both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar only need to select their first point of entry when filling out the application form.
• A single visa covers travel to both destinations (no need to apply for a new visa).
3. Application Options
• Online Application (recommended): Apply through the official Tanzania Immigration Services website: www.immigration.go.tz.
• Visa on Arrival: Available at official entry points.
• ⚠️ Important: Kindly apply for visas at least 20 days before departure to allow sufficient processing time.
4. Passport Requirements
• Passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
• Passport must have at least one unused visa page.
5. Entry Requirements
• Visitors must show a valid return ticket upon arrival in Tanzania.
6. Visa Fees & Validity
• Ordinary Visa: USD $50 – valid for up to 90 days.
• Multiple Visa (for US citizens only): USD $100 – valid for 1 year.
7. Payment & Notifications
• Visa fees can be paid online using Visa Card or MasterCard.
• After payment, applicants receive a confirmation notification.
• Approval/visa grant notices are sent by email.
• Travelers should wait for the official approval notification before starting their journey.
As you prepare your visa applications for the Zanzibar trip, we kindly remind you to also arrange your travel insurance. This will ensure you are fully covered during your travels and stay.
Please make sure both your visa application and travel insurance are completed in good time to avoid any last-minute issues.
